I wanted to share a class lesson that anyone can practice daily. Although I wrote this lesson from an instructors point of view, you can read it and follow along like you are a student as well.
Instructors: Have karate students stand in a straight line facing you like on a starting line for a race.
Everyone, hold up your right fist. “Raise one finger on your right hand if…
1. You ate at least one green vegetable or piece of raw fruit today.
2. You drank two tall glasses of water? (Not juice, tea or coffee — clear, pure water)
3. You meditated, prayed or practiced mindfulness today.
4. You read a book (not a comic book or anime book) – listening to a book on an app like Audible counts.
5. You practiced karate, exercised or stretched out for 20 minutes or more today. (Before class)
*put a finger up on that hand for each yes answer.
Now lower your right hand and keep the total number of fingers extended.
Now hold up your left fist and raise a finger for each Yes answer.
1. You had a carbonated beverage today. (Pepsi, coke, Mt. Dew, Sprite, etc.)
2. You ate fast food, a candy bar, chips or something in a package today.
3. You slept LESS than 6 hours last night.
4. You got in an argument or fight with somebody today.
5. You played a video game or computer game for over an hour or more.
*Put a finger up on your left hand for each yes answer.
Now it’s time for the race!
The total number of fingers extended on your right hand means you step forward that many steps. Now, use the total number on your left hand to step backwards that many steps.
Look around? Who won the day?
“We don’t always win the day. Some days are definitely better than others. Notice that it is the small choices that you make daily that make your day a winner or a loser. For example, drinking more water, getting enough sleep, reaching for healthy fruits and vegetables instead of that candy bar all can help you feel your best. Decide to win the day and not let the day beat you!”
Bonus question: Who made it to class today? Take 5 steps forward! Those other students that didn’t make it missed out on this important lesson for strengthening your mind, body and spirit.
